And, we're back!
It's been a long time since The Real Theatre blog was alive and kicking - but we're back in action now, folks, and ready to keep it real in 2009.
Our company members have been doing some very exciting things over the past year - Helen went on tour for "A Christmas Carol," Laura started her own design company (The Red Bird Designs), Geoffrey joined the cast of the New Group's "Mourning Becomes Electra," Emma was in final callbacks for a role on "Flight of the Conchords," and as for me...I wrote a lot of musicals!
There are many plans in the works for Real Theatre, but most immediately, we have two one-night shows coming up.
The first, on May 5th is Screenwriters' Night at the School of Visual Arts' new, BEAUTIFUL theatre in Chelsea. RTC Board Member John Gallagher directs this annual "live realization" of student-written work, and this year, Real Theatre is designing and production managing the event. The evening will feature the acting skills of many members of the RTC family as well.
Almost immediately following, on May 15th, we'll be presenting the world premiere of "America" by Kim Yaged at the Downtown Urban Theatre Festival. Emma is on board as choreographer, and together, she and I are collaborating with this incredible playwright to fully realize this choreopoem. Perhaps the most challenging and daring piece ever tackled by the RTC, "America" takes on racial & sexual stereotypes and explores - through movement and raw, unapologetic text - what it means to live as any color in this country.
More news coming soon - stay warm!
xoxo

Production Manager
The Real Theatre Company is seeking a Production Manager for the first
show in their 2008 season.
After a triumphant summer in 2007, with our production of HAIR
extended and expanded from the Neighborhood Playhouse to the Acorn
Theatre at Theatre Row, we are continuing our tradition of bold live
theatrical experiences in the coming year. We have four shows slated
for production in 2008 and are looking for someone wildly creative and
dedicated to join us for the first show, with the opportunity for
further collaborations. Organizational skills and strong drive are a
must. Pay according to experience-level. Note: Show 1 is "straight
play," not a musical.
Also seeking: stage manager, costume designer, volunteer interns
The offbeat, eccentric and feisty are encouraged to apply.

Review in AM New York
We're back, and we've been extended! But in the meantime, check out HAIR's first-run review, from AM New York critic Matt Windman:
"...as for HAIR, I saw this weekend long non-Equity revival at the Neighborhood Playhouse on 54th Street, where I had never been before. The cast was made up primarily of Neighborhood Playhouse students and alumni. Since they did not cut a single number from the score - they even did "Dead End" and "The Bed" - it ran three hours. Luckily, it was a very good production. And the more I think about it, it was eerily authentic. Why? Because HAIR is not meant to be a polished show. It's supposed to be a happening, an Off-Off-Broadway piece of alternative theater, though once on Broadway. Here was a production in a small intimate space, where most of the cast was not vocally outstanding, but totally committed physically and dramatically. It is this kind of authenticity that professional concert productions of HAIR - Actors Fund, Encores - all lack" (July 1st, 2007)
