It's been a long time since The Real Theatre blog was alive and kicking - but we're back in action now, folks, and ready to keep it real in 2009.
Our company members have been doing some very exciting things over the past year - Helen went on tour for "A Christmas Carol," Laura started her own design company (The Red Bird Designs), Geoffrey joined the cast of the New Group's "Mourning Becomes Electra," Emma was in final callbacks for a role on "Flight of the Conchords," and as for me...I wrote a lot of musicals!
There are many plans in the works for Real Theatre, but most immediately, we have two one-night shows coming up.
The first, on May 5th is Screenwriters' Night at the School of Visual Arts' new, BEAUTIFUL theatre in Chelsea. RTC Board Member John Gallagher directs this annual "live realization" of student-written work, and this year, Real Theatre is designing and production managing the event. The evening will feature the acting skills of many members of the RTC family as well.
Almost immediately following, on May 15th, we'll be presenting the world premiere of "America" by Kim Yaged at the Downtown Urban Theatre Festival. Emma is on board as choreographer, and together, she and I are collaborating with this incredible playwright to fully realize this choreopoem. Perhaps the most challenging and daring piece ever tackled by the RTC, "America" takes on racial & sexual stereotypes and explores - through movement and raw, unapologetic text - what it means to live as any color in this country.
More news coming soon - stay warm!
xoxo
